What to Consider If You Want To Work in the USA

| December 17, 2013

workSome people dream of moving to a different country in order to start or progress their career. There are many other reasons that attract people to places abroad alongside their job, and this generally includes things like lifestyle, potential income, and overall happiness. One such place that has been appealing to British people for many years is the USA.

The United States of America is a vast country, with many different climates, cities and cultures. That means there are so many different types of job on offer, some of which may be available to British citizens in some circumstances. So before you start figuring out the more complicated subjects such as US tax returns and immigration status, cast your mind over some of the basic topics you will need to consider if you want to work in the USA.

What job to do

The first thing you will want to think about is what type of job you actually want to do when you get out to the States. You will probably need to spend quite a lot of hours scouring online job ads to get a good idea of what type of role you could fit into. However you may be fortunate enough to work for an employer in the UK who has an office in the USA and is looking for an employee to go out and work there. This is often the easiest way to go about moving as it means you will have someone to support you through all of the decisions and paperwork.

Where to live

Once you have got a good idea about what you want to do when you move, you will need to create some sort of radius for where you want to live. This can be as small or wide as you like. For example you may only be interested in New York City, but then again you might simply want to live and work in one of the warmer states down south. Once you decide, it will be a lot easier to apply for specific job opportunities.

Bringing your family

The process can get a little bit more complicated if you have a family to consider as well. There are always going to be certain restrictions when it comes to immigration, so you will need to ensure that you will actually be able to bring your family members with you.

Housing arrangements

If you have the go ahead to bring your family and start a job in the USA, you will need to think about what type of home is best for you. Will you rent or will you buy somewhere? Do you prefer city living in an apartment, or will you be happier in the suburbs? There will be resources online that will be so helpful in making these choices.

Seeing your family

Finally, if you have parents or other family members in the UK, will you be happy to leave them for a long period of time? Living abroad isn’t for everyone, so you will really need to think about whether you can handle the emotional goodbyes. You will also want to come up with solutions of how you can see family at least once a year.
