Starting Your Running Career But Don’t Have A Fortune To Spend? Here’s Some Money Saving Tips
Running is a great way to prioritize our health, look after ourselves, and make friends.
Unfortunately, the equipment can be quite expensive! Whilst running itself is free, some of the things you need to help keep yourself injury free and comfortable can add up.
So, we’re here with some great tips to help you save money on your fitness whilst not compromising on quality!
Do Your Trainer Research
First up, you need to get the right trainers. If you go super cheap on your trainers, then it’s very likely they won’t provide the right support and you may end up getting injured, which is the last thing you want.
However, this also doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune. Firstly, we’d recommend going to a running shoe shop that does an analysis of the type of runner you are.
They’ll look at your feet in a pair of trainers they’ll give you and ask you to walk and jog on a treadmill. They will then be able to recommend the type of trainers you need.
Don’t feel pressured to buy there and then, because they may recommend some of the most expensive naturally, so make sure they tell you whether you run neutrally, you’re an overpronator with low arches or a supinator with high arches.
This will depend on the type of trainers you should get.
From here, go away and do your research. You should expect to spend a minimum of around £80-£150 on a decent pair of running trainers, just to give you an idea, however if there’s one thing you should invest in, make sure it’s your trainers.
A good tip is to go to outlet websites, such as Asics who have one, then they’ll be selling fantastic trainers in old colourways, that you can save significant amounts of money on!
Invest In A Few Great Items, Not A Whole Wardrobe
Next, moving on to your clothing, we’d recommend investing in a couple of great items, not a whole wardrobe.
You want to have clothes that will last, won’t cause chafing, and will keep you cool.
So, our favorite thing to do is buy two tops, perhaps a tank and then a T-shirt, then you should also buy two bottoms, a pair of gym leggings and shorts.
Make sure they’re all complementary colors, and then you can mix and match for many combinations! Then, choose one good quality running jacket.
Whilst you’re buying good quality, it doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune.
Again, go onto outlet websites for the brands you like and find off-season, great quality pieces much cheaper.
Also look out for end of season sales and flash sales. There are quite a lot of good outlet shops in the UK, so heading to those and having a look at what they have to offer is also advised.
This is such a simple tip but can save you so much money!
Join A Free Run Club
Another good tip to help you really enjoy your time running is to join a run club.
Running is mostly something you do on your own, however there are many benefits of joining a run club is a great way to meet people with something in common with you and also to push yourself to new levels.
Another great thing about run clubs is that often they work with sponsors and have great discounts to offer!
This could be discounted running shoes or equipment or cheap entry into races.
You benefit from the social side, you can push yourself to new levels, learn great tips from more experienced runners and even save some money on your new hobby!
Forget The GPS Watch, Get Strava!
Many runners will say they rely on their GPS watch to track their running, and whilst they might be good, they’re not essential.
Instead, get yourself a free running app like Strava.
The only feature that this doesn’t track is the calories you burn or your heart rate, however it will track your distance, your time and break down your performance into time per mile or KM.
It also helps you to connect with other runners and friends to see what they’re doing and get inspiration for running routes.
If a GPS watch is within your budget, that’s great, but if not, you can do the same job with a free running app you can get on your smartphone.
