Polar Vortex Expected to Return for Super Bowl XLVIII
There have been concerns about the safety of fans at MetLife Stadium since it was selected to host Super Bowl XLVIII due to the potential weather threats. In the past, this has forced the NFL to reschedule games in case of extreme weather conditions at the stadium.
Super Bowl XLVIII is the premier sporting event in the U.S. every year. It has 100’s of thousands of people travel to the hosting city and multiple millions of dollars are spent in the area also. Many people schedule their trip and make plans to travel to the event, a rescheduling of event day would cause havoc for fans. Not only for attendees would there be a problem, but also for restaurants, bars and clubs that schedule parties and events. They would need to be canceled or rescheduled.
Super Bowl XLVIII is the supreme day for the zealot fan. All season, fans gather to watch games together. They socialize and have football parties all in their love of the game. They gamble on the outcomes and study the statistics of players. Fans should not be underestimated for their devotion to the game. Planning officials must consider all safety concerns and also the expectations of the fans.
The executive V.P. of the events, Frank Supovitz, stated in Mid-December that due to safety issues or unforeseen problems, rescheduling is the only option on the table. These contingencies may force the team to play Monday or Tuesday.
He also said that generally there are rescheduling or postponement scenarios for all the 256 regular-season games every year and most of the Super Bowl stadiums are informed of these conditions, from the beginning. He concluded by saying that there have been cold weather games played in the past and the snow has been falling during these games but the current weather anticipated is extreme and unpredictable.
It’s a very serious question and important enough to prompt another rescheduling of the NFL’s premiere event. The safety of attendees and players are paramount. The polar vortex as well as blizzards experienced by more in the Northeast, especially over the first 2 weeks after the New Year, might be sufficient to warrant a rescheduling consideration. In addition, as fate could have it, the early indications are that is exactly the type of weather facing Super Bowl XLVIII.
A meteorologist, Wes W. Junke, who also works for the National Weather Association, has also predicted that from January 21st, through the early February, most of the Northeast is likely to experience its 2nd Polar Vortex of the new year with the temperatures dipping 20 to 30 degrees below average. Moreover, the worst of the second round of this Polar Vortex is also expected to hit over the next 10 to 14 days. The tail end coming for Super Bowl XLVIII.
New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority chairman, Mr. Wayne Hasenbalg commented on Friday that the management of the team also insisted that they will start planing on Monday and the forecasting experts should give them a good idea of what to expect.
In conclusion, with a long-term forecast covering the date of the Super Bowl, it is not yet known even as the team moves closer to game day that weather predictions may cause the worst nightmares for the NFL.
