How to tip correctly

When a server or service person does a good job for you, you want to give them a nice tip to show your appreciation, the question is how much is a good tip. You can ask 10 people how much to tip in a certain situation and you will get several different answers. To make matters worse the vast array of service people makes the giving of the correct tip a difficult process.

To know what the proper amount to tip is we asked the Emily Post Institute for their help.

At a restaurant or bar.

Waiter or waitress: 15% of the bill for adequate service, 20% for very good service, no less than 10% for poor service.
Wine Steward: 15% of the cost of the bottle.
Bartender: 15% to 20% of the tab, with a minimum $1 per drink
Parking valet: $2.00 to bring your car to you.
Washroom attendant: 50 cents to $1.

In Daily life:

Taxi driver: 15 % with an extra dollar or $2 for help with the bags.
Food delivery person: 10% of the bill or $1 for bills up to $10. 15% to 20% for difficult deliveries.
Grocery loader: $1 to $3 depending on number of bags.
Barber or hairdresser: 15% to 20%, minimum $1 and $1 to $2 for shampoo or manicure person.
Coffee shop staff: no tip, but optional.
Handyman and Gas attendent: no tip

When Traveling.

Skycap: $1 per bag, $2 if skycap takes bags to check-in.
Hotel Doorman: $1 per bag, minimum $2.
Hotel Bellhop: $1 per bag, minimum $2.
Hotel Housekeeper: $2 to $5 per night.
Hotel concierge: $5 for getting tickets or reservations

These guidelines are a starting point and depending on the situation, a greater amount may be required.
