How to Redo Your Walls and Love Them

| March 13, 2018

RemodelingRemodeling your home, or even just one room within your home, is a daunting task. You have a vision for your home, and it can be hard to make that vision a reality.

Especially when you’re doing the home remodel project by yourself, there’s added pressure to make sure you do a good job. If there’s something that is a bit out of your depth, and you think you could cause damage if done wrong, then you may not want to embark on that project on your own.

But there are some home remodeling projects that are easy to tackle on your own, and will do wonders for the overall look of your home. Updating your walls is one of the easiest ways to make a huge impact in a room.

Painting

The color of your walls has a huge impact on not only how the room looks and feels, but how big that room looks and feels. It’s an important part of interior design, and not a decision to take lightly.

When you’re picking a new color, pick up a few different paint samples and tape them to the wall. It’s impossible to know exactly what your room will look that color, but it can help you get an idea of the final product, to see that color associated with that room.

It’s also helpful to see the way the color looks when the sun hits it at different times of the day.

RemodelingIf your room has a really dark color on the walls, and you’re hoping to go to a lighter color, you’ll need to prime the walls before you can apply paint. Similarly, if the room has wallpaper, you’ll have to remove that wallpaper before you get started. Removing wallpaper is a hassle.

You have a few different options when it comes to removing the wallpaper. If it’s in good condition, you can find a different wallpaper pattern you like more and place it over. Aside from that, you can either steam off the offensive wallpaper or carefully strip it with water.

Update windows

Your windows are an important part of your walls, and small updates to your windows will make a big impact on the room. Window treatments, such as blinds, drapes, or window tinting, will make a statement and improve the overall look of the room.

Be selective with what you choose, to make sure it goes with the room. Often, you should select these things once the room is already painted your desired color.

Make the most of your kitchen walls

RemodelingYour kitchen is one of the most important rooms of your home. You spend a lot of waking hours in this room with your family, cooking and preparing meals, as well as eating together. It’s a room for bonding and it should be a room that you love spending time in.

Warm colors do best for the walls of a kitchen. This doesn’t mean you need to select something like orange or yellow, just make sure that whatever color you do select has warm undertones to it. Warm greys and even off whites can be perfect for a kitchen.

Another great way to transform the walls of a kitchen is to install a backsplash. This is an easy DIY project, whether you’re handy with a tile saw or not. You can cut the tile and grout it to the wall yourself, or you can purchase backsplash stickers that are easy to install onto the walls of your kitchen.

For a more put together look, pick a backsplash that is the same or similar color to that of the rest of the kitchen, and select switch plate covers in a matching or complimentary color so they don’t stick out.

You can take it one step further and paint your cabinets to match the colors of your kitchen as well. This will tie the whole room together, and make it look more open, and put together.

And subsequently, you’ll find yourself spending more and more time in the kitchen, even if it’s just to sit at the kitchen table and enjoying a morning cup of coffee by yourself.
