Many people feel stressed by the level of debt that they are carrying through life. One way to help alleviate that stress is to turn to professionals for assistance with debt management. There are many agencies and organisations out there that can help people organize their debts into more manageable amounts, either through a debt management plan or a debt consolidation loan.

A debt management plan is where you review your household income and expenses and work out how much per month you can afford to spend on debt repayments. With a debt management agency you can agree to make a monthly debt repayment which will then be redistributed amongst your creditors. In this way, you pay a little of your debt off every month, but you don’t have to deal with the creditors directly. It makes life simpler, but you’ll usually have to pay a fee to the debt management company to have this service. And of course, you need to stick to the scheduled payments that you have committed to with the debt management company.

A debt consolidation loan is where you take out a new loan to cover the costs of paying off all your existing debts. Some people prefer the clarity of this solution, but it doesn’t mean your debts are wiped out. You still need to work towards paying off the debt consolidation loan, keeping up with repayments so that you don’t end up earning excessive interest on that. It may take longer to pay off the total debt this way, but you will probably be able to do so at a lower rate of interest than you will already be paying on store and credit cards, etc.

Before you go down either of these routes, though, you may be able to start with some DIY debt management yourself. If you have a friend or relative who is sensible with finances and can help you review your household budget, there are many ways that you can trim down your expenses and maximize the surplus income you have available to pay off debts. It may be that you don’t have to go down the professional debt management route, after all.
