Apple vs. Microsoft: Which is Best for Computing?
When it comes to computers there are some arguments and debates that never seem to end. The topic of “Apple vs. Microsoft” is a key example. Yet, when you remove the surplus and superficial aspects of this debate, what is the core concept behind the two companies?
If you remove the fashion and popularity issues, which is better for computing? This may still arguably depend on your individual circumstances and tastes, but it none the less poses a question that seems all the easier to answer.
Value and Price
The major difference between the two platforms is their availability; specifically, how the availability affects the value and price. Microsoft, for instance, don’t make their own computers. Their operating system and software can be found on a variety of third-party manufactured devices. This often makes the prices cheaper, due to competition and a wider range of Microsoft devices to choose from. This does, of course, also vary the level of computing quality.
Apple, on the other hand, manufactures its own devices. More than just the operating systems and key software, Apple provide a computing device built with this in mind. This is one of the common arguments why you can sell macbook pro and other Apple products for a better price than any Windows equivalent.
As a counter, one could argue the cheaper value of Windows means it’s easier to get the same computing specifications for less. Whilst not built from the ground up by one company, there are many reputably computer developers and manufacturers that make high quality Windows PCs.
Safety and Usability
It’s not gone unnoticed that Apple computers have often been more user friendly. The simple layout makes for a quick and instant experience. This is, however, at the cost of the more technical aspects that Windows offers. Whilst one can certainly argue that Windows 8 goes a long way to counter this, the functionality and accessibility of the user interface will no doubt sway certain people towards Apple, which have more experience in keeping the interface simplified.
Likewise, online safety is an increasing problem with computers. Apple is not averse to viruses, but the majority do seem to trouble Windows computers. That said, the technical aspects and adaptability of Windows allows users to set up working firewalls and anti-virus software.
Software Adaptability
Likewise, if you’re into computing, you will have specific needs. This in turn may reflect your judgement when it comes to Apples and Windows PC’s. Each have their own software. Macs, for instance, have a reputation for being good with media, although this isn’t something Windows can’t do.
This is something that will, therefore, depend highly on your choice of software, but from a pure computing point of view it is none the less crucial. An operating system is only worth the software and services you can install onto it. Both companies have growing markets for their operating systems, so this really is a matter of personal preference.
