3 Simple Ways to Make Space for Holiday Visitors

| December 24, 2017

You have friends or relatives who are coming to stay with you in your home during the holiday season. Space is at a premium, and you just don’t know where everyone will sleep during this time period.

Some innovative suggestions to help you accommodate everyone in your household include the following:

Re-Think Your Living Space

Look at the space you have and think of ways to rearrange your household. If you live in a warm climate, relegate all of the children to a tent in the backyard (where they are going to have the time of their lives), and designate their rooms as adult sleeping areas.

Or if you have a covered patio, move all of your living room furniture outside, add heaters, and furnish the living room as a bedroom with a blow-up mattress and impromptu side tables.

If you have a screened porch, cover the windows temporarily and turn it into a guest bedroom. Be creative. This is a time when you can really enjoy family and friends, and it is to everyone’s benefit to make things work in any way that you can.

Utilize Your Camper

If you own any type of camper, take it out of storage and park it in your driveway or backyard. This is a great place for your older kids and their young guests to sleep.

Adult guests can then move into the children’s rooms for the duration of their visit. If you don’t own a camper or trailer, borrow one from friends or relatives, or rent one for the time of the visit. Your children will never forget “camping” in their own yard for this holiday season.

Rent a Storage Unit

No, you don’t want your guests to sleep in one of these units, but you can clear out some of your belongings from areas of your home and store them until the holidays are over.

Companies like Walsh Moving & Storage often offer different sized units to fit whatever you need to get out of the way. For example, you may have a gorgeous formal dining room that you never, ever use.

For the duration of your guests’ visit, clear the room of the table, chairs, and buffet table and set it up as an extra bedroom. Your guests will be so comfortable in their own space—it will sure beat sleeping on the lumpy sofa bed in your living room.

The holidays are all about enjoying your family and friends. Any way that you can make them comfortable in your home will be greatly appreciated. Enjoy your times together and make a point to visit them the following year.
